Wanna be a gaming designer?

HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW.

You don’t need us to tell you that playing video games is fun. From winning in Temple Run to grabbing chicken dinner in Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, gaming in India has come a long way. But what is even cooler is that gaming is a flourishing industry, wherein you can carve a successful career.

Game designing is a high-paying career choice in India. While it is relatively new and unconventional, it is filled to the brink with opportunities. However, for gaming enthusiasts, tech-savvy youth, and virtual artists, it can be tricky to understand what profession could fulfil their innovative dreams of becoming an expert in the field.

Now obviously, creating a brand-new game from scratch isn’t a child’s play. The gaming industry is evolving at a spiralling pace. As more video games are created, more skills such as graphic design, software program improvement, coding, audio, and programming are becoming in demand.

So, what is it that game designers do?

Game designers are basically the architects of the scene. From the game to the rules, the environment, content, storylines, characters, levels – they visualise the entire underlying concept of the game.

Once everything is clear on paper, game designers work on developing and running the game with the support of developers, programmers, animators, music producers and sound engineers. They work in tandem to ensure that ideas are implemented as planned. Another important aspect of a game designer’s job is to conduct market research for assessing the feasibility of the game.

Game designers, in a way, are like movie directors. They apply the art of design and the science of understanding gamer psychology to come up with ideas and concepts that please the audience. Game designers create concepts for online games, Personal Computer (PC) games, console games, board games, live-action games, and even card games. In the contemporary corporate world, designers are ‘gamifying’ learning experiences for employees. Therefore, career opportunities for aspiring game artists and designers are endless.

How to become a gaming expert in India?

A typical game designing degree course has a duration of three to four years. However, there are other options that allow applicants to master the skills of game design or game art faster.

What are the prerequisites for becoming an ace game designer in India, you ask? Desired education levels and sufficient practical experience is all it takes. You get to learn the basics of art, drafting, colour theory, graphic design, game engines, game creation, human-computer interaction, game environments, music, and sound at premier institutions like EDGE.

Candidates should also know popular game development software including Maya, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Nuke, Mudbox, ZBrush, Premiere Pro, AfterEffects, yED, etc

After completing senior high school, you can apply for game design and game development courses. Being culturally aware, multilingual, and familiar with different demographics is an added advantage as designers are expected to create games that will appeal to a wider audience in the future.

Game designing is having a major moment right now. If you think this is your call of duty, do not waste your time! This year, enrol for a comprehensive game design degree or a game art and design diploma at a premier institution like EDGE.
